Old Panvel: Uncovering the Rich Heritage of Navi Mumbai’s Oldest Suburb

Panvel is a town in Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the eastern side of the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway. The city has an extensive train terminal. Many express trains and commuter trains stop at Panvel.

Panvel was a thriving town when it was located in the Konkan region. 

During Portuguese rule, the town was famous for its rice market. The city developed into a commercial and trade hub in the Maratha period. Many palace-like homes were built during this period. Today, the city is also famous for watermelons. There is a water storage system in the area.

Panvel is home to the Gadeshwar synagogue, which is visited by Jews and non-Jews. The temple and the synagogue are both parts of Indian heritage. Moreover, the fort of Karnala is in the vicinity of the city. Located 370 meters above the mean sea level, the defense was a major trading route between these areas.

The railway station of Panvel is on the Harbour line of the Central Railway. This line runs through Juinagar, Mankhurd, Govandi, and Belapur CBD. Several non-daily express trains and 13 daily commuter trains stop at Panvel. These are the Harbour line, Trans-Harbour Line, and Central line trains.

The railway station is a critical junction on the Central Railway. The railway station is a refueling point for locomotives. NMMT buses are available from the inner parts of the city. Moreover, many share autos are available.

The major political parties in Panvel are PWPI, BJP, and Shivsena. However, there are other parties as well. One of the oldest municipal councils in Maharashtra, the Panvel Municipal Council was formed in 1852.

Many bus routes run from Panvel to other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Many ST buses are available from the city to destinations like Alibaug, Khopoli, and Karjat. Besides, many parcel bookings are made at the Panvel train station. Hence, the transportation infrastructure in the city needs improvement.

Panvel is a medium-sized city that is surrounded by hills on two sides. It is separated from Badlapur by the Western Ghats. Panvel is situated on the banks of the Gadhi river. Despite its large population, it is a congested town. Nevertheless, the roads are well-maintained.

The city is a junction point for various suburban trains. Besides, the Panvel railway station is a terminus for the Harbour line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. Similarly, the Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express has a technical halt at Panvel.

Panvel is a densely populated city with a mix of the population. Most of the autorickshaws are not under the control of the RTO. Hence, the minimum fare is slightly higher than the rest of Navi Mumbai. Nonetheless, there are several cheap CNG fuel stations at Panvel.
